It is pretty crazy to think that an ad for Quaaludes ran, showing a family man happily gazing at his wife and daughter as the ad describes how helpful the drug was in order to sleep through the night. Now completely banned, quaaludes turned out to be highly addictive and quite destructive.

This is perhaps the closest that a 1950s ad would get to being size inclusive. While the dress being marketed here was meant to be more size inclusive, the tone of the ad and terms being used could nowadays be interpreted as condescending and even downright offensive. It’s hard to say what the effect was back then, but today it would absolutely not fly.
