Niagara Falls Frozen Solid, 1911
There are actually three waterfalls situated on the border shared by New York and Ontario, though they are collectively referred to as the Niagara Falls. Individually, they are called the Bridal Veil Falls, the Horseshoe Falls, and the American Falls. The trio forms the southern tip of the Niagara Gorge. They usually freeze up during wintertime, though they never ice over completely. This majestic photo dates all the way back to 1911 when the falls iced up.
Lincoln’s Head Under Construction at Mount Rushmore, 1937
The Mount Rushmore National Memorial showcases a sculpture carved right into the granite of Mount Rushmore. The huge igneous rock mass is located in Keystone, South Dakota. Artist Gutzon Borglum deserves the credit for the designs as well as the supervision of the project from 1927 to 1941. The sculptor was also assisted by his son throughout the process. This picture gives us a close-up photo of the construction of Lincoln’s likeness as well as a taste of the tedious work involved!
