Alcatraz had cement walls. With time, it could be chipped and eroded away. The convicts collected cafeteria spoons and turned them into makeshift picks. That’s what they used to slowly remove the cement from the walls.

Though it was effective, it was quite tedious because it required patience to chip away at those walls. The inmates could listen to music at night, which covered up the sounds they made. In fact, Frank used an accordion to mask the sounds.
