Parton and Wagoner put out a number of songs together until she left the show in 1974. She was then signed to label RCA Victor. Her very first single, “Just Because I’m A Woman” only reached the #17 spot on the charts. She released a number of other solo singles in the late 60s, but none were as successful as the work she did with Wagoner.

Wagoner had an idea to help Dolly become the star she dreamed of being. He convinced her to record her own version of “Mule Skinner Blues,” originally a hit for Jimmie Rodgers. Finally, her solo career took off and the song hit #3 on the charts! She then recorded her first ever #1 single, “Joshua.” She continued to top the charts in the following years.
