Samuel L. Jackson struggled with his addiction for years before getting completely sober in 1991. He said in an interview on radio show Sway In The Morning: “For me, I have a direct correlation between getting sober and success because when I was in rehab, Spike Lee called (for 1991’s Jungle Fever). So as soon as that happened — when Jungle Fever happened — I started going to lunch in Hollywood. Or I won that award in Cannes, they created that award in Cannes for me.So my success directly correlates to me getting straight and me getting in touch with who I am and understanding what my talents were and how to tap into them in a positive way and not that negative way that I used to.”
Edie Falco
Edie Flaco, known for her role in Nurse Jackie and The Sopranos, stopped drinking when she was 29. She shared: “I was a non-drinker for years, then I had my first drink at college and I found nirvana,” and that alcohol felt like “the answer to all my problems, and the cause of all my other problems.” After too many incidents, she decided to completely cut it out of her life.
Keith Urban
Keith Urban struggled with his alcohol addiction for years and spent two times in rehab, once in 1998 and once in 2006. He shared: “I had to find a way to be different in this world. I’m glad it didn’t change anything about my music. I wrote plenty of hit songs while drunk. I wrote plenty sober. I feel lucky it hasn’t defined my creativity.”
Kelly Preston
The late Kelly Preston shared that “With drinking, I just decided that I wasn’t always at my best. There were times where I drank too much, for sure. When I didn’t drink, I felt amazing, and I woke up feeling amazing every single day. For me, I find that our kids came in half the time to teach me about myself and to help me with others, and they have helped me so extraordinarily.” She sadly passed away in July 2020 from breast cancer.
Ewan McGregor
In an interview with Variety, Ewan McGregor shared that when he played a heroin addict in 1996’s film Trainspotting, “I didn’t realise I would end up with addiction problems myself then. I became sober in 2000. So now, when I’m looking at characters who are addicts, I look at it through a different lens of understanding it more. An everyday part of my life is being sober.”
Matthew Perry
In a 2002 interview with the New York Times, Perry shared: “When [fame] happens, it’s kind of like Disneyland for a while. For me it lasted about eight months, this feeling of ‘I’ve made it, I’m thrilled, there’s no problem in the world.’ And then you realize that it doesn’t accomplish anything, it’s certainly not filling any holes in your life. I didn’t get sober because I felt like it. I got sober because I was worried I was going to die the next day.” He has been sober since 2001.
Brad Pitt
In an interview with GQ, Brad Pitt shared that he stopped drinking after abusing alcohol for too long. He said: “I had to step away for a minute. And truthfully I could drink a Russian under the table with his own vodka. I was a professional. I was good,” continuing by saying that he doesn’t “want to live that way anymore.” He said that his drink of choice is now cranberry juice and fizzy water.
Jennifer Lopez
While Jennifer Lopez is not 100% sober, she does say that she avoids drinking and smoking in order to maintain her incredible skin. She told Us Weekly: “I don’t drink or smoke or have caffeine. That really wrecks your skin as you get older.” Lopez is quite outspoken about living a healthy lifestyle, and she says she tried to get as many hours of sleep as she can as well.
Bradley Cooper
Bradley Cooper opened up about his addiction to cocaine and alcohol, crediting fellow actor Will Arnett for helping him get sober in July 2004. He said that going to therapy and support from his ex-girlfriend Irina Shayk as well as becoming a father helped him. He said that after his daughter was born “Everything changed. Every single thing is absolutely shaded by or brought out in glorious colors by the fact that I get to be a father to a wonderful human being. It’s just the absolute greatest thing.”
Tyra Banks
Tyra Banks never struggled with addiction because she shared that: “I feel like I’ve been very lucky because I don’t really have an addictive personality. I’ve never had any drugs, and I had a little taste of alcohol when I was 12 years old, but that’s about it.” She completely abstains from addictive substances in order to stay focused on her successful career.
Kristin Davis
In an interview with Marie Claire, Kristin Davis shared that she is completely different from her on-screen persona of Charlotte York who loves to drink cosmopolitans. She said: “I’m a recovering alcoholic. I’m kind of shy normally, so I felt like I needed help. One thing led to another and I was drinking.” She knew she had to cut out drinking in order to be able to focus on acting, and after some time in rehab, she stopped drinking.
Jada Pinkett-Smith
Jada Pinkett-Smith shared in a 2005 interview with Contact Music that: “I found myself drinking two bottles of wine on the couch and I said, ‘Jada, I think we’ve got a problem here.’ I had problems with alcohol and I really had to get in contact with the pain, whatever that is, and then I had to get some other tools in how to deal with the pain. From that day on I went cold turkey.”
Robert Downey Jr.
Robert Downey Jr. struggled with addiction for many years before getting sober in July 2003. He credits his wife, family, therapy, 12 step programs, meditation, yoga, and kung fu with helping him stay on track. In an interview with Oprah, he said: “It’s really not that difficult to overcome these seemingly ghastly problems. What’s hard is to decide to do it.”

Christina Ricci got her start in the world of acting from a very young age, so she was exposed to the world of Hollywood partying very early on. She tried out drinking and experimenting with drugs, but she said: “I went through a normal kind of late teens, early 20s drinking, but it was a choice I made, because I didn’t think it was very good for my life.”

Naomi Campbell told Vogue in a 2010 interview: “The time between 1998 and 2005 was especially bad. During that time I avoided looking in the mirror, because I didn’t like the person who was looking back at me. To be honest, there were times I thought I wouldn’t survive. I used to have a lot of problems. Amongst others I drank too much so I joined Alcoholics Anonymous to get and stay sober.”

In a 2012 interview with GQ, Lana Del Rey said: “When I write about the thing that I’ve lost I feel like I’m writing about alcohol because that was the first love of my life. Sure, there have been people, but it’s really alcohol.” She began drinking when she was a teenager and also incredibly got sober while still in her teens.

Leona Lewis has a strict no-alcohol policy, because as she’s admitted herself in Fabulous magazine: “It would probably have been very easy for me to have been like Amy [Winehouse].” She told InStyle that she doesn’t enjoy the taste of alcohol and “I don’t drink, I haven’t for years, it tastes like hairspray to me — I can have a great time without alcohol. I don’t need that to get me up on the dance floor, I’m there already. I’ll sometimes have a little Red Bull. That’s my little buzz.”

Lucy Hale told US Magazine that when her TV show Pretty Little Liars became popular, she tried to fit in to the Hollywood scene. She said: “I tried really hard to be the social butterfly. Becoming a part of this popular show … everyone just says yes to you, so you get away with a lot, and then you make mistakes.” She now focuses on living a healthy life and has no interest in the party scene anymore.

In April 2021, Jack Osbourne marked 18 years of sobriety. He shared on social media: “It’s not that it get easier or harder, It’s just that it’s life on life’s terms. If anyone is trying to get sober, know that it possible if you are willing to do the work. Sending lots of love to my people who have been on this journey with me. #sobersbetter”

In 2021, Rob Lowe shared “Today I have 31 years drug and alcohol free. I want to give thanks to everyone walking this path with me, and welcome anyone thinking about joining us; the free and the happy. And a big hug to my family for putting up with me!! Xoxo”

In an interview with the BBC, Calvin Harris opened up about his decision to quite drinking altogether. He said: “I don’t do much partying nowadays. I’m a very serious guy. I’m a professional, so no. I’ve stopped drinking.”

In 2008, Eva Mendes checked into rehab and has remained sober ever since. She told Interview magazine: “I’m proud of people who have the determination and the fearlessness to actually go and face their demons and get better. This is a life or death situation.”

Ben Affleck shared that in 1997, after appearing in his ffilm Good Will Hunting, he decided to quit drinking. He told Fox News: “I just wanted to stop. I started regretting some things I did when I was drunk. It’s funny to be obnoxious or out of control, but then it’s like, ‘I think I hurt that person’s feelings, ‘I made a fool of myself’ or ‘I didn’t want to kiss that girl.’ I have almost no inhibitions, so it’s dangerous for me.”
Macklemore
Macklemore first drinking when he was just 14. By age 25, he was abusing drugs and alcohol to the point where he was depressed and suicidal. He decided to get sober and began going to inpatient treatment and 12-step meetings. He told Today: “Sobriety is not a daily struggle, but it is a daily effort. I have to be proactive about my recovery. When I talk about it, I get a spiritual reprieve.”

Blake Lively never had a problem with substances, but she abstains just the same. In 2012, she told Allure magazine: “I don’t drink. I’ve never tried a drug… it’s not like I decided on these strict lifestyle choices and I’m enforcing them. It’s just something that I genuinely don’t have a desire for.”

Kim Kardashian was never a huge drinker. In 2016, her sister Khloe shared with Elle: “Kimberly does not drink alcohol whatsoever… she’s just never been into it.” She has said that she does not enjoy drinking, but she will have a glass of champagne on a holiday or special occasion, but nothing really beyond that.

Common is well known for advocating all the pure things in life like peace and love. He is not part of the mainstream party scene and so he stays away from drinking and drugs. He works out on a regular basis and tries to eat a healthy diet.
Logic
While growing up, Logic’s father was addicted to drugs, and sometimes his father would buy drugs from Logic’s brothers. Being surrounded by drugs throughout his childhood, he decided to stay away for good. His only vice is his Newport cigarettes, but he stays clear from any hard stuff.
Pharrell Williams
Pharrell Williams made the decision that he’s stay away from drugs and alcohol, and his successful career shows that it was the right choice. He told Paper magazine: “Everybody else can do what they want, but that stuff isn’t for me. I’ve been drunk nine times in my life, and I ate some weed brownies once.”

Sarah Silverman opened up about her reason for not drinking. She told The Guardian: “I have a Jewish stomach or something. I just don’t like the taste of alcohol. My boyfriend will open up a bottle of wine and I will take a sip and pull a face. It tastes like poison.”

Eminem decided to get sober after he nearly lost his life in a drug-fueled incident in December 2007. He joined a 12-step program which has helped him stay on track with his sobriety for years. He shared that Elton John helps him as well, saying: “He usually calls me once a week to check on me, just to make sure I’m on the up-and-up. He was actually one of the first people I called when I wanted to get clean.”
Gerard Butler
After struggling for many years with his drug and alcohol addiction, Butler decided to check into rehab and get clean. He has been able to stay sober for over 20 years at this point. On rehab, he said: “Maybe a stronger person wouldn’t have needed to go. When you hear the word rehab, you think, ‘He’s a mess, he’s f—ed up.’ But I’m glad I did it. I’ve made a s–tload of wrong decisions in my life. But I know I’ve made some right ones as well.”

Tattoo artist and reality star Kat Von D has been sober since 2007, when she realized that her drinking was affecting her tattooing. While on The Rosie Show, she shared: “I had made a promise to myself that if there was ever anything in the way of my ability to tattoo that I would cut it out. When I realized that drinking was getting in the way, I woke up one day and said I don’t want to drink anymore, and it stuck.”

Chris Martin partied in his early fame days, but he made the decision to life a healthy lifestyle and cut out all drinking, smoking, and even coffee. He has said that he gets depressed when he drinks, so he stays away from alcohol altogether.
