Sherwood Schwartz said that Robert Reed only worked on The Brady Bunch because he had to fulfill a contractual obligation with Paramount. Initially, Reed was meant to star in a sitcom based on Barefoot in the Park (he had done this on Broadway), but the show never came to fruition. Moreover Reed was also in consideration for a TV adaptation of Houseboat, which got the axe. With both sitcoms dead in the water, playing Mike Brady seemed more plausible.
