The Russians are of course known as the first country to have a spacecraft enter space. This happened in October 1957. The name of the spacecraft? Sputnik I of course! Its launching inspired a billion-dollar space race between the US and USSR as part of the Cold War.

If you worked in an office in the early 50s, it was an entirely different world. Can you see the draught beer? It seems like this was more of a normal practice rather than a perk reserved for high-tech companies.

Back in the 1850s, a popular form of entertainment was watching a horse and its rider dive into the water. In this picture you see this happening from the top of a 90-foot tower! The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals actually quickly put a stop to this.
